The story of Corde
The Greek word named the material before it named anything else: strings for instruments and for bows were made of gut, and khorde is the gut. Latin borrowed it, French wore it to corde, English took cord for anything rope-like, and then in the sixteenth century scholars reinserted the Greek h in the musical sense and produced chord. The two have been separate words ever since even though they are one. There is a small casualty of this: the vocal cords are not cords at all — they are folds of tissue, and anatomists now say vocal folds — but the older name is stuck because somebody once thought they looked like strings.

The Hulon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Corde's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hulon climbed just as high around 1920, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hulon's path sketches the road Corde is walking now.
Corde sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
