Coralyn
Feminine · “Greek "maiden”
Cora is not a name in Greek — it is a euphemism. Korē means the maiden, and it was used for Persephone because saying the queen of the underworld's real name was risky. The Greeks did the same with the Furies, calling them the Eumenides, the kindly ones.

The story of Coralyn
Taboo avoidance in naming is well attested in Greek religion. Persephone was addressed as Korē, the maiden, or simply as the goddess; Hades was called Plouton, the wealthy one, because the earth holds both the dead and the harvest; the Erinyes, the Furies, were called the Eumenides, the kindly ones, in the hope that flattery would help. The pattern is the same one that produced Bruin and Bear for an animal whose true name Northern Europeans avoided. Korē traveled into English as Cora with the euphemism forgotten, took on a full life as a nineteenth-century name, and was then extended with the mid-century -lyn suffix. Coralyn peaks in 1936.

Greek "maiden", with the American -lyn ending
Korē means girl or maiden, and was Persephone's cult title. Cora may also come from Latin cor, the heart, or be an independent modern name; Fenimore Cooper's use of Cora in The Last of the Mohicans in 1826 did much to establish it in English. The -lyn ending is the American suffix from Lynn and carries no meaning. The compound Coralyn is not a name in any older tradition.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
