The story of Coralie
Red coral was fished from the Mediterranean and traded across Europe for jewelry and for amulets — coral beads were hung on children as protection in Italy and elsewhere for centuries. The name Coralie appears in French in the nineteenth century, when the fashion for coral jewelry was at its height, and traveled from there into English and into Quebec. Its American record sits mostly in the early twentieth century, and it has been returning recently in France and Britain more than in the United States.

coral
French Coralie is generally built on corail, coral, from Latin corallium and Greek korallion — a word the Greeks appear to have borrowed from somewhere further east, possibly Semitic, and its earlier history is not recoverable. A competing line connects the name instead to Latin Cora, from Greek kore, 'maiden'. Both are real and the French name may belong to either.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Cleda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Coralie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cleda climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cleda's path sketches the road Coralie is walking now.

The trade-off
- Cora is a ready short form and a complete name of its own with a long record.
- Three syllables with a light ending, which pairs well with most surnames.
- A concrete meaning — a real material — rather than an abstract quality.
- The stress falls differently in French and English, so the child will hear both.
- Coralie, Coraline and Coral all circulate and get confused in speech.
- Its meaning is contested between coral and a Greek word for a maiden.
