Copeland
Masculine · “bought land”
Copeland is given to both — 1,198 boys and 281 girls since 1880. See other names given to both
Copeland began as a stretch of ground in north-west England — land that had been bought rather than inherited — and it has been a place name, then a family name, for roughly a thousand years. Said aloud it falls into two plain English pieces, cope and land, which is why nobody has to spell it twice. As a first name it belongs to the long American habit of moving surnames to the front.

The story of Copeland
Copeland is a real district on the Cumbrian coast of England, in country that was thickly settled by Norse speakers in the Viking age, and its name comes from their words for bought land. Families who came from there carried the place name with them as a surname, and there is a second Copeland in Northumberland with the same story behind it. From Britain and Ireland the surname traveled to North America, where it became common enough to be recognizable on its own. Its move into the given-name column is far more recent, part of the broader turn toward surnames as first names, and it has taken hold most firmly in the American South.

The Leobardo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Copeland's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leobardo climbed just as high around 1991, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leobardo's path sketches the road Copeland is walking now.
Copeland is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Built from two ordinary English words, so it is spelled correctly on the first hearing by almost everyone.
- A documented place name and surname with about a thousand years of continuous record behind it.
- Has a ready-made short form in Cope, plus the affectionate Copey, so it is not a name locked into its full length.
- Familiar as a surname across the English-speaking world, which gives it a settled sound even where it is new as a first name.
- The spelling Copland, without the middle e, is well known to Americans from concert programs, and your child will likely have that letter dropped from time to time.
- Its use as a first name is a very recent wave, so nearly everyone carrying it is a child. Adults with this name are almost always going by it as a surname.
- Surname names rarely stay on one side of the aisle for long; Copeland is recorded for boys, but expect the occasional assumption to run the other way.
- A child with this name will most likely be the only one in the school, which some children enjoy and others find tiring in the roll-call years.
