The story of Warner
The name begins as Germanic Warinhari, which survives on the continent as Werner and was Latinized in medieval documents as Guarnerius — the form later stamped inside the violins of the Guarneri workshop. Normans brought it to England as Warnier and Garnier, where it hardened into the hereditary surname Warner and spread widely enough to become one of the commonest English family names. Like many English surnames, it then crossed back over into use as a given name, which is how it reached American records. It has also long been a genuine first name in Dutch and Frisian, alongside the variant Warnaar.
