The story of Shia
Hebrew Yeshayahu belonged to the prophet whose book sits among the longest in the Hebrew Bible, and it traveled wherever Jewish communities traveled — into Greek as Esaias, into Latin and then English as Isaiah. Yiddish speakers in Central and Eastern Europe wore the long form down in daily use to Shaya and Shia, a household name rather than a synagogue one, and carried it to New York with everything else. That is the likeliest source of most American Shias, and it fits where the name is strongest today. The spelling also reaches American readers through Arabic, where shīʿa names a branch of Islam, and occasionally as a variant of Shea.

Through Hebrew Yeshayahu: "the Lord is salvation"
The best-attested road is the Yiddish short form of Yeshayahu/Yeshaya, the name of the prophet Isaiah, from Hebrew roots meaning "salvation" and the divine name. Separately, Arabic shīʿa means "faction, party" — the word behind Shia Islam, though it is a term rather than a common personal name in Arabic. A third route is simply a respelling of Irish-derived Shea. US records do not distinguish which family a given child came from.
