The story of Leobardo
Leobardus was a sixth-century Frankish hermit whose life Gregory of Tours recorded, and the name passed into Spanish naming. Separately, Leopardus was an early Roman saint's name and the two have been confused for centuries. The name is used in Mexico and appears in American records with Mexican families through the twentieth century.
Meaningscholars disagree
bold as a lion
Generally read as Germanic leo or lewa with hard, bold or hardy. A competing reading takes it from Latin Leopardus, a saint's name, which is itself the word for the animal — believed in antiquity to be a lion crossed with a pard.

The Glade test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Leobardo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Glade climbed just as high around 1939, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Glade's path sketches the road Leobardo is walking now.
Leobardo sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Leo is a complete short form in very current international use.
- A documented sixth-century figure stands behind the name.
- Every letter is said, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- Eight letters and four syllables is a great deal for early handwriting.
- Leobardo and Leonardo are close in an English ear and constantly confused.
- The second element is genuinely argued between two unrelated sources.
