The story of Armand
Herman was a Frankish and German name, and French developed Armand from the same source — the two look unrelated and are the same name. Armand became a standard French name, carried notably by Cardinal Richelieu, whose given name it was. French and French-Canadian families brought it to America, and it appears in the registers through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, peaking around 1922.

The Orval test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Armand's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Orval climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Orval's path sketches the road Armand is walking now.
Armand sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
