The story of Colm
Columba founded the monastery on Iona in 563 and from there Irish Christianity reached Scotland and northern England; Lindisfarne is a daughter house. The story of the copied psalter and the judgment of Diarmait mac Cerbaill is preserved in later sources and may not be historical, but the Cathach, a psalter traditionally said to be the disputed copy, survives and is among the oldest Irish manuscripts. Colm is the modern Irish form of the name and is in ordinary use in Ireland. It reached United States records with Irish families and had its best year in 1965.
Meaning
dove
Irish Colm, from Latin columba, a dove. The saint's full name, Colm Cille, means dove of the church. The Latin word is the same one behind the constellation Columba and the surname Colombo. The dove reading is not in dispute; the connection to the Holy Spirit made it a favored name in early Irish monasticism.

The Ollin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Colm's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ollin climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ollin's path sketches the road Colm is walking now.
Colm sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
