The story of Claudette
The Claudii were a great patrician house of the Roman republic, and the name passed into Gaul through the empire, where a seventh-century bishop made it a saint's name. France kept Claude in continuous use for a thousand years — for both sexes — and formed Claudette and Claudine as explicit feminines. American use of Claudette rose in the 1930s and peaked around 1938, at the height of the fashion for French -ette names.
Meaning
lame
From the Latin claudus, 'lame', through the Roman family name Claudius. Roman family names were often built from a physical description of a founding ancestor. The -ette ending is the French diminutive, carrying affection rather than meaning.

The Lessie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Claudette's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lessie climbed just as high around 1904, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lessie's path sketches the road Claudette is walking now.
Claudette sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two thousand years of continuous documented use stand behind the root.
- It is a genuine French name rather than an English construction.
- The end stress gives it a distinct rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
- The literal meaning is 'lame', which some families will want to weigh.
- It is firmly period-coded to the 1930s and 1940s.
