The X in Xmas is a Greek letter, not a crossing-out. It is chi, the first letter of Christos, and scribes have used it as an abbreviation since at least the fourth century — so the spelling people object to as modern and irreverent is older than most of the words around it.

Where it comes from

The story of Chrissy

Scribal abbreviation was a practical necessity when writing materials were expensive, and the sacred names were among the most heavily abbreviated: the nomina sacra, written with the first and last letters and a line above. Chi-rho, the first two letters of Christos, appears on coins and standards from the fourth century and is one of the oldest Christian symbols. Xmas is attested in English from the sixteenth century and Xpian for Christian earlier still. The objection to it is a nineteenth- and twentieth-century development, based on reading the X as an English letter rather than a Greek one. Chrissy as an American name peaks in 1978.

Meaning

Diminutive of Christine — Greek "anointed"

Christine and Christina are from Latin Christiana, a Christian, from Greek christos, anointed. Chrissy is the clip with the -y diminutive ending. The Greek letter chi, written X, has served as an abbreviation for Christ in manuscripts and inscriptions for over sixteen hundred years, alone or combined with rho as the chi-rho monogram.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Chrissy went to 14 girls in 2025, but Krissy is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 19, which makes it the 941st most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,550 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 84,593 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 114,805 for Chrissy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, phonetic and impossible to mispronounce.
  • Chris is an immediate short form for either sex.
  • The fuller names behind it are settled and very widespread.
What to consider
  • It reads as a nickname rather than a full legal name.
  • Chrissie is a competing spelling.
  • The late-1970s peak dates a bearer fairly clearly.
