The story of Chisom
The translation choice was consequential. When Christian missionaries in the nineteenth century needed an Igbo word for God, they used Chukwu and Chi, which brought an existing concept into a new role and flattened a distinction Igbo speakers had maintained. The chi of traditional belief is personal, plural across the population, and closely tied to an individual's fate; the Christian God is singular and universal. Both senses are now live in Igbo naming, and the enormous family of Chi- names — Chisom, Chidera, Chinelo, Chiamaka, Chinyere, Chukwuemeka — carries both readings at once. The American figures for Chisom peak in 2015, with Nigerian immigration.
Meaning
Igbo "God goes with me" or "my chi is with me"
From Chi, the personal spirit or divine principle, plus so m, follows or accompanies me. Missionary translation adopted Chi and its compound Chukwu, the great chi, for the Christian God, which fixed the English gloss as God. In older Igbo usage a chi is individual: each person has one, it is bound up with their fortune, and the proverb quoted by Chinua Achebe — when a man says yes his chi says yes also — is about personal agency rather than about a deity.
