Where it comes from

Our story of Chaz

Ours, offered as ours. Charlemagne's name did something almost no other personal name has managed: it became the ordinary noun for a monarch across an entire language family. Polish król, Czech král, Russian korol and Hungarian király are all Karl. Caesar did the same for German Kaiser and Russian tsar. Two men's names became two words for a king in half of Europe. Chaz is four removes and eleven centuries from that.

Meaning

free man

From Germanic karl, a free man as against a noble; Charlemagne's fame made his name the Slavic word for a king, which is why Polish król and Russian korol exist. The name means the opposite of what it produced.

Chaz sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1988, with 526 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Chaz went to 22 boys in 2025, but Chas is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 27, which makes it the 901st most-given boys’ name of the year — 3,638 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 63,262 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 77,640 for Chaz itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Isidore test

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Chaz's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Isidore climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Isidore's path sketches the road Chaz is walking now.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Germanic meaning with an extraordinary afterlife in Slavic.
  • Charles stands behind it as a fuller formal option.
  • Four letters and one syllable — as short as a name gets.
What to consider
  • It reads as a nickname, which may matter on a formal document.
  • It is strongly associated with one American decade.
  • A one-syllable name gives no room for a nickname.
