The story of Isidore
The cult of Isis was one of the most widespread in the Roman empire, and Greek-speakers in Egypt made names on it freely. Several of those people became Christian saints without anyone changing the names — Isidore of Seville, the seventh-century encyclopaedist, is the best known. The name has been in Jewish use as well, as an English substitute for Isaac and Israel, which is why it appears in American records in real numbers around 1914.
Meaning
gift of Isis
From Greek Isis, the Egyptian goddess whose cult spread across the Mediterranean, and doron, a gift; the same second element closes Theodore and Dorothea, which mean gift of God in the two possible orders.
