The story of Chasity
English Puritans of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries gave abstract virtue names in large numbers, and a handful survived: Faith, Hope, Grace, Charity. Chastity was rare until the twentieth century, when it returned as part of a broader American revival of the category. Chasity, the respelling without the t, appears in the registers alongside it in real numbers and peaked in the early 1980s.
