Catarino
Masculine
Names usually travel from men to women and not back. Catarino goes the other way: a man's name built out of a woman's, because Spanish and Mexican families named children for the saint whose day it was, and if that saint was Catherine the boy got a masculine made on the spot.

The story of Catarino
Saints' day naming was taken seriously in Spain and Mexico and it produced results that surprise outsiders. A child born on a feast day could be given the saint's name whatever the saint's sex, and Spanish simply built the missing form: Catarino from Catalina, Marino and Mario alongside Maria, Trinidad and Guadalupe for boys and girls alike. That is not a quirk of individual families but a working system, and it is why Mexican records contain masculine forms of women's names that exist nowhere else. Catherine herself is one of the most venerated saints in Europe and one of the least documented; the church twice concluded that nothing about her could be verified.
