Caston belongs to the modern revival of the -ton ending on boys, which since about 2005 has produced Paxton, Braxton, Colton, Easton and Caston. The ending is a genuine Old English word for a settlement, and the fronts attached to it are increasingly invented. Caston's American peak is 2017, which makes it one of the newest names in this part of the list.

Where it comes from

The story of Caston

The -ton names arrived on the American boys' list in two distinct waves. The first, around 1900, promoted genuine surnames — Milton, Carlton, Wilton, Clinton — usually through the practice of giving a mother's family name to a son. The second began in the 1990s and works differently: the ending itself became the fashionable part, and parents attached it to fronts chosen for sound. Braxton, Paxton, Kingston, Easton and Caston all belong to this wave, and several of them correspond to no surname at all. Caston sits at the newer end of it, and its rise after 2010 tracks the peak of the whole -ton fashion.

Meaningscholars disagree

a settlement — the first element is uncertain

The -ton is certain: Old English tun means an enclosure, a farmstead or a settlement, and it is the most common ending in English place names. The front is the question. Caston is a real village in Norfolk, recorded in Domesday Book, whose first element is a personal name; but the modern American given name is at least as likely to be built from Cash, Case or Carson plus the fashionable ending, or to be a respelling of the French Gaston, which is a different name entirely.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Cash is a ready-made short form already popular on its own.
  • The pronunciation is obvious from the spelling with no real ambiguity.
  • It fits a large, familiar family of names while being uncommon itself.
What to consider
  • Caston, Casten and Kaston all circulate, so records will drift.
  • It is easily heard as Carson, Caleb or Gaston.
  • The -ton fashion dates the name closely to the 2005-2025 window.
