Where it comes from

The story of Carma

The Carmel ridge runs to the Mediterranean above modern Haifa, and its name in Hebrew means garden land, which describes it accurately: it is green where the country around it is not. It appears in the book of Kings as the site of Elijah's contest with the prophets of Baal. In the twelfth century a group of hermits settled on it and became the Carmelite order, and when they were driven west they carried the mountain's name to Europe, where the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel spread through Spain, Italy and Latin America. The given names followed the devotion: Carmela, Carmelo, Carmelita and Carma are all children named after a mountain most of their families would never see.

Meaning

Hebrew karmel, garden land or vineyard

Carma is a variant of Carmel or Carmela, from Hebrew karmel, meaning a garden, orchard or fertile field, and used as the name of the mountain range in northern Israel. The devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel produced the given names Carmel, Carmela, Carmelo and their variants. The American peak is 1935.

Carma sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1935, with 75 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Carma went to 9 girls in 2025, but Karma, Kharma and Karmah are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 141, which makes it the 819th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,288 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 11,399 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Carma itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
