The story of Carlyn
Charlemagne was crowned emperor in 800 and his reputation reached every part of Europe that had contact with the Frankish world. In the Slavic languages his name was taken as the word for a king, which is why Polish has krol, Czech kral, Russian korol and Serbian kralj, all from Karl, and none of them from any native Slavic root. That is an unusual thing to happen to a personal name and there are few parallels: Caesar became Kaiser and tsar, which is the same phenomenon a few centuries earlier. In both cases a title was made from a man rather than a man being given a title. The English Charles came through French and stayed a name, and the underlying Germanic word survives separately in English as churl, meaning a peasant and then a boor, which is the same word traveling in the opposite social direction.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
