The story of Fumiko
When Japanese literature begins, it begins with women. Men of the Heian court wrote in classical Chinese, which carried prestige; the phonetic script that had grown up alongside it was considered a women's hand and beneath serious use. So the women wrote in it, and what they produced in that supposedly lesser script — a long court novel, a book of observations and lists, several diaries — is what the tradition rests on a thousand years later, while most of the Chinese-language writing of the same court is read today only by specialists. The modern bearer who made this exact name known was a novelist who had grown up poor, working as a maid, a factory hand and a street vendor. She turned the notebooks from those years into an episodic diary of drifting and casual work that sold in enormous numbers, and she went on writing, including as a war correspondent, until she died at forty-seven.
Meaningscholars disagree
writing, or letters, with the ending for a girl
The sound fumi is most often written with the character for writing or a letter, but several other characters share the sound and each carries a different sense; the romanised form cannot tell you which a particular family used. The ending is the one that marked daughters' names for most of the twentieth century.

Three syllables, all short and even. Japanese does not stress syllables the way English does, so an English speaker will add a stress somewhere; putting it lightly on the first is closest.

Fashion outlook
Fumiko sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Every syllable is open and simple, so English speakers can say it correctly on the first try.
- Fumi works as a short form and is a real name in its own right.
- It is unambiguous on the page: nobody will guess at the spelling.
- The ending places the name in a specific generation and is now rare in Japan itself.
- The romanisation throws away the characters, which are where the meaning actually lives.
- American speakers will add a stress the language does not have, and the name will be said several ways.
