The story of Carlota
Karl was a word before it was a name and an emperor made it royal. Its feminine diminutives spread from France across Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and Spain and Portugal took Carlota. A nineteenth-century Belgian princess became empress of Mexico under that name, which is one reason it is well known in Latin America. It appears in American records with Hispanic families from the nineteenth century.
Meaning

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
