Where it comes from

The story of Carlotta

Karl meant an ordinary free man, and Charlemagne's fame turned it into the word for a monarch across the Slavic world — one of the clearest cases of a person's name becoming a common noun. French made Charles and its feminine Charlotte, and Italian made Carlo and Carlotta. It reaches American records in real numbers with Italian emigration and peaked around 1900.

Meaning

free man

From Germanic karl, a free man or a common man as against a noble; Charlemagne's name spread it so widely that Slavic languages took karl as their word for a king, which is where Polish król and Russian korol come from.

Carlotta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1947, with 188 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Carlotta went to 35 girls in 2025, but Carlota is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 76, which makes it the 884th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,183 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 21,148 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 45,922 for Carlotta itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Germanic meaning with a genuinely remarkable afterlife in Slavic.
  • Carla and Lotta are both complete names in their own right.
  • Every letter is said, so Italian and Spanish speakers read it at once.
What to consider
  • Charlotte is far more common in America and looks quite different.
  • It reads as of an older generation to Italian speakers.
  • Eight letters and three syllables is a fair amount for early handwriting.
