Where it comes from

The story of Camron

Clan Cameron was one of the great Highland clans, prominent in the Jacobite risings. The surname became a given name in the twentieth century and rose enormously in America from the 1970s, reaching the top forty. Respellings followed, and Camron — which cuts a letter rather than adding one — peaked in the early 2000s.

Meaning

crooked nose

From the Gaelic cam, 'crooked' or 'bent', and sròn, 'nose'. Clan Cameron of Lochaber took the name from an ancestor so described. A separate Cameron surname comes from a place name meaning 'crooked hill'. Both elements are ordinary Gaelic and the reading is undisputed.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Camron went to 72 boys in 2025, but Kamron is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 143, which makes it the 785th most-given boys’ name of the year — 1,271 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 11,945 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 23,723 for Camron itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths

  • A documented Highland clan stands behind it.
  • Cam is a short, clean, immediately available form.
What to consider
  • Cameron is overwhelmingly the standard spelling.
  • It is thoroughly unisex in America and does not signal sex on paper.
  • It is closely dated to the 2000s in this spelling.
