California is named after a novel. A Spanish romance printed around 1510 described an island near the Indies ruled by Queen Calafia and populated entirely by women, and when Spanish sailors reached the long peninsula in the Pacific they gave it the book's name. It stuck, and a state is still carrying it.

Where it comes from

The story of Calley

The book was Las Sergas de Esplandian, a sequel to a sequel, the sort of chivalric romance Cervantes was mocking a century later, and it was popular enough that Cortes and his men had read it. The island of California in the story is ruled by a queen, guarded by griffins, and made entirely of gold. What the Spanish actually found was a very long dry peninsula, and the name was applied anyway. Calafia's own name may be built on caliph. Whether any of this stands behind an American girl called Calley is doubtful — the likelier road runs through Caroline and Callie — but the state is where most people will have met the sound.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Calley has no single source. It is a spelling of Callie, which may come from Caroline, from Callista, or from Cali — itself a clip of California and a city in Colombia. None of these has been shown to be the parent, and the -ey ending is one of three English ways of finishing a pet name.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Calley went to 7 girls in 2025, but Kaley, Kalei and Caley and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 70, which makes it the 890th most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,042 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 22,961 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Calley itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables that everyone can say correctly on first hearing.
  • Cal works as a short form and serves either child.
  • It is short without being obviously a shortening of any one thing.
What to consider
  • Four spellings of this sound are in use and none of them is standard.
  • It has no documented meaning, which is worth deciding about before a child asks.
  • It reads as a pet form, and people will ask what the full name is.
