Where it comes from

Our story of Kaley

Ours, offered as ours. The 1985 song is genuinely the most documented moment in this name's history: it reached number two in Britain and the name entered the British records within a year, which is about as clear a cause as name history ever offers. Behind it, the Irish caol is real and old — the word for narrow that names Scottish and Irish straits. Kaley is one of at least eight live spellings of the sound.

Meaningscholars disagree

slender, from a word for narrow

The Irish surname Ó Caollaidhe is built on caol, slender or narrow — the same word that gives Kyle its straits. Kayleigh was popularized by a British song of 1985 and may be an independent assembly of Kay and Leigh. Neither line is settled for this spelling.

Kaley sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2003, with 578 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kaley went to 38 girls in 2025, but Kalei, Caley and Calley and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 70, which makes it the 890th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,942 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 22,961 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 42,297 for Kaley itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
