Brynna is genuinely Welsh at the root. Bryn is the ordinary Welsh word for a hill, and it is a real Welsh men's name; Bryn Mawr, the Pennsylvania town and college, means great hill. Adding an -a produces a feminine form that Welsh itself does not use but that English speakers reach for naturally. Its peak is 2003.

Where it comes from

The story of Brynna

Welsh naming produced a set of short, hard-consonant names in the twentieth century that traveled well into English: Bryn, Rhys, Gwen, Owen, Dylan, Carys. Bryn is among them, and it is masculine in Wales. English-speaking countries have consistently reinterpreted it as feminine, helped by Brynn, Brynna and Brynlee, and by the phonetic resemblance to Brenda and Bree. Bryn Mawr College, founded in Pennsylvania in 1885 and named for a Welsh estate, gave the word an American association with women's education that almost certainly contributed to the shift.

Meaning

hill

Welsh bryn means a hill or a mound and is entirely ordinary — it appears in place names across Wales, most famously in Bryn Mawr, 'great hill'. As a personal name Bryn is modern and masculine in Wales. The -a ending is the standard Indo-European feminine marker and is applied here by English speakers rather than by Welsh grammar, which would form a feminine differently. The root is settled.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Brynna went to 20 girls in 2025, but Brina is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 28, which makes it the 932nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,985 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 57,402 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 80,363 for Brynna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a single concrete word in a living language.
  • Bryn and Bree are both usable short forms with different characters.
  • The spelling is short, distinctive and phonetic in English.
What to consider
  • In Wales the root name is masculine, which Welsh speakers will notice.
  • Brynna, Brynne, Brynn and Brenna all circulate and are easily confused.
  • The -a ending is English rather than Welsh grammar.
