Where it comes from

Our story of Brylan

The -lan ending is worth examining because it looks like a suffix and is not one. Dylan is Welsh and means the sea. Nolan is Irish, from Ó Nualláin, and means descendant of the champion. Harlan is English, a place name meaning hare land. Three completely unrelated names that happen to end in the same two syllables — and once three popular names share an ending, American naming treats it as a suffix and starts attaching it: Brylan, Kaylan, Jaylan, Rylan. What was a coincidence of three etymologies becomes a productive element. Brylan is a product of that, and its 2012 peak sits inside the -lan family's American run.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source establishes an etymology. The Bry- opening comes from Bryan, whose own meaning is genuinely unsettled — noble, high and hill are all proposed for the Irish Brian and none is established. The -lan ending is shared with Dylan, Nolan and Harlan, which have three unrelated sources between them. Brylan is not recorded outside American use.
