Brydon
Masculine
Blackmail is a Border word. On the Anglo-Scottish frontier, mail meant rent or tribute, and black mail was what riding families extracted for not burning your farm. The word came out of three centuries of organized raiding by a set of surnames that operated as clans in a zone neither kingdom controlled.

The story of Brydon
The Border reivers were not outlaws exactly; they were the ordinary population of a hundred-mile strip that both crowns used as a buffer and neither policed. Families rode on both sides of the line, stole cattle, took hostages and sold protection, and loyalty ran to the surname rather than to either kingdom. Armstrong, Elliot, Graham, Kerr, Nixon and Bryden are among the riding names. It ended abruptly in 1603, when one king inherited both thrones, renamed the region the Middle Shires and hanged or transported a great many people. Two English words came out of it: blackmail, and bereave in its older sense of being robbed.

Line the two peaks up, and Ericson's path sketches the road Brydon is walking now.
