The story of Brodrick
Welsh surnames were fixed late and mostly by English administration, and the fusion of ap with the following name produced a distinctive set: Powell from ap Hywel, Price from ap Rhys, Pritchard from ap Richard, Bowen from ab Owain, Broderick from ap Rhydderch. Each looks like an ordinary English surname and none is. Broderick crossed to America with Welsh and Irish migration. Its use as a given name is twentieth-century; the actor Broderick Crawford, who won an Academy Award in 1950, kept it visible, and the American record for the trimmed Brodrick spelling peaks in 1980.

son of Rhydderch — 'reddish-brown' or 'exalted'
Welsh ap means 'son of', and it fuses with the following consonant: ap Rhydderch gives Prydderch and then Broderick. Rhydderch itself is generally read as containing rhudd, 'red, reddish-brown', though a reading as 'exalted' is also proposed. Rhydderch Hael was a sixth-century king of Strathclyde. A separate Norse route exists too: Old Norse Brodir, 'brother', gives an Irish and Manx surname that also anglicizes as Broderick.

The Bobie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Brodrick's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bobie climbed just as high around 1936, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bobie's path sketches the road Brodrick is walking now.
Brodrick sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Brody and Rick are both current short forms with independent lives.
- The Welsh compression behind it is genuinely interesting and easy to explain.
- The spelling matches the way the name is actually said.
- Broderick is the more common spelling and hers will be written that way.
- The Welsh and Norse derivations are both live, so the meaning needs a qualifier.
- Its American curve is around 1980, which places a bearer's generation.
