Breann
Feminine
Brian is one of the most successful men's names Ireland ever produced, and it has no feminine form in Irish at all. American parents made one anyway, several times over, and Breann is the shortest of the results — Brianna with everything unnecessary taken out.

From Brian to Breann
The story of Breann
Brian Boru, the eleventh-century high king who broke the Norse hold on Ireland, fixed his own name in Irish memory permanently, and it survived nine centuries of English rule with its spelling intact. When Irish names came back into fashion in America in the second half of the twentieth century, Brian came first and came hard. What happened next has no Irish precedent: parents wanted the sound for daughters and Irish offered nothing, so English supplied the endings. Briana, Brianna, Breanna, Breanne, Bryanna and Breann were all built here, out of an Irish name and an English suffix, in about thirty years.
Meaningnot established
the meaning of Brian is not settled
Brian is Irish or Breton and its root is disputed: a word for hill or height, a word meaning noble, and an element found in old Celtic names have all been proposed. Nothing has been established. The -ann ending is English, borrowed from Anne, and carries the Hebrew Hannah, grace, only in the loosest sense.

The Jenni test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Breann's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jenni climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jenni's path sketches the road Breann is walking now.
Breann sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two syllables where the fuller versions have three, which is rarer than it sounds.
- Bree works immediately and is a name in its own right.
- Every sound in it is ordinary English, so nobody has to be taught it.
- Breanna, Brianna and Breanne are all commoner, so this spelling will be lengthened by other people.
- The stress is genuinely unsettled between the first and second syllable.
- Brian has no agreed meaning, so the name inherits an open question rather than an answer.
