Where it comes from

The story of Brandy

Distilling wine concentrates it and makes it keep, which is why Dutch traders were doing it in bulk in the sixteenth century — a barrel of spirit took less room on a ship than the wine it came from, and the original intention was to add water back at the other end. Nobody did. The word came into English with the trade and lost its second half almost immediately. As a name it belongs to one stretch of American years and one song: a record released in 1972 about a barmaid in a harbor town was enormously played, and the figures rise steeply after it. The spelling with a y rather than the drink's own is the commoner one for the name.

Meaning

burnt wine

From Dutch brandewijn, from branden, to burn, with wijn, wine. English had brandywine in the seventeenth century and clipped it within a few decades. The name is the drink, and the drink is the process.

Brandy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1981, with 6,898 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Brandy went to 53 girls in 2025, but Brandi is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 81, which makes it the 879th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,188 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 19,843 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 30,326 for Brandy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Dutch etymology that can be checked in any dictionary.
  • Two syllables that everyone can already say and spell.
  • Three short forms, one of which serves either child.
What to consider
  • It is the name of a spirit, and the association is permanent and not entirely convenient.
  • It was among the most given names of one decade, which places the bearer in time precisely.
  • The very few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper.
