The story of Brandi
English took brandewijn from Dutch traders in the seventeenth century and shortened it to brandy. Its life as a name is American and recent, part of the mid-century turn toward warm English words used for girls. What makes Brandi its own name rather than a misspelling is the ending: through the 1970s and 1980s the -i finish was applied so widely and so deliberately that it functioned as a naming convention, and this spelling peaked in the early 1980s, a few years behind the -y one.
