Blessin's American record is recent, peaking in 2020.

The story of Blessin
Igbo, Yoruba and other Nigerian naming traditions give names that are statements — about the circumstances of a birth, about God, about what a family hopes. When Christianity arrived, English virtue words fitted that pattern exactly, and a set of them became genuinely Nigerian names: Blessing, Precious, Favour, Gift, Godspower, Peace, Patience, Goodluck. These are not translations of English fashions but native uses of English words within a West African system, and Blessing has been among the most common Nigerian women's names for decades. American records show it and its variants rising with Nigerian migration, and the dropped g reflects how the word is often said rather than any deliberate respelling.
Meaning
a blessing; a gift of divine favor
Old English bletsian, to bless, is a genuinely strange word: it appears to derive from blod, 'blood', and originally meant to consecrate with blood, from pre-Christian sacrificial practice. When the Bible was translated into English the word was used for the Latin benedicere, 'to speak well of', and the meanings merged. So an English blessing carries a pagan sacrificial root and a Latin verbal one at once. Nothing about the modern sense is contested.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
