From be'ulah to Beulah
The story of Beulah
The word became a place in the English imagination through John Bunyan, who in The Pilgrim's Progress made the Land of Beulah the country just before the river, within sight of the destination. From there it entered hymns, and from hymns it entered the naming practice of English-speaking Protestant families, particularly in the American South and in Wales. It is a name that arrived through singing more than through reading.
Meaning
married
Hebrew be'ulah, 'married' or 'espoused'. In Isaiah it is applied to the land of Israel as a bride reclaimed rather than to any individual, which is unusual: most biblical names belong to people first.

The trade-off
- A documented biblical word with a clear meaning and an unusual one: it names a place, not a person.
- Two syllables and a soft ending, which is the shape most current girls' names take.
- Almost nobody uses it, so it is genuinely uncommon without being invented.
- The name is strongly associated with a particular era of American and Welsh religious life, and it carries that context with it.
- The spelling gives no clue to the pronunciation for anyone meeting it written first.
Nobody names a baby alone.
