Where it comes from

The story of Becky

Rebecca is the wife of Isaac in Genesis, introduced at a well and portrayed as the decisive actor in the story of her sons' inheritance. The name reached English through the Reformation, when Old Testament names became available to ordinary families, and stayed in steady use for four centuries. Becky was its spoken short form throughout, and Vanity Fair in 1848 gave it a heroine sharp enough to make the name memorable. American registration peaked in the late 1950s.

Not established

Through Rebecca, from the Hebrew Rivqah. The root is usually connected to a verb meaning to tie or bind, which has been read as 'snare', as 'noose', and as 'captivating' — the last being a nineteenth-century softening rather than a translation. Some scholars connect it instead to a word for a tethered animal. Nothing is settled.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Rebecca stands behind it with a documented history reaching into the Hebrew scriptures.
  • Short, warm and impossible to mispronounce.
  • Bex is available as a sharper modern alternative.
What to consider
  • The meaning of the parent name is genuinely unsettled and the traditional readings are not flattering.
  • Given outright it stays informal; Rebecca on the certificate keeps both registers.
