Where it comes from

The story of Jodi

The Book of Judith, in the Greek Old Testament, tells of a widow who saves her city by walking into the enemy camp and beheading its general — a scene painted more often than almost any other biblical subject. The name was used steadily in Europe from the Middle Ages and heavily in English from the Reformation. Judy and Jody are its twentieth-century American clippings, and the -i spelling belongs to the 1960s and 1970s wave, peaking in the mid-1970s.

Meaning

woman of Judea, Jewish woman

From the Hebrew Yehudit, the feminine of Yehudi — a person of the tribe or kingdom of Judah. The tribal name itself is explained in Genesis from a verb meaning to praise. The chain from tribe to region to people to name is fully documented.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jodi went to 36 girls in 2025, but Jody is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 52, which makes it the 908th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,067 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 30,909 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 44,646 for Jodi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Judith stands behind it with a documented history reaching back to the Hebrew scriptures.
  • Short, bright and impossible to mispronounce in English.
  • Jo is available as a further short form and stands alone.
What to consider
  • Three spellings were current at once, so the written form has to be given.
  • Jody is also used for boys in American records, so the sound is not a sex marker.
