Where it comes from

The story of Jody

The Book of Judith tells of a widow who saves her besieged city by walking into the enemy camp and killing its general — a scene painted more often than almost any other biblical subject. The name was used steadily in Europe from the Middle Ages and heavily in English after the Reformation. Judy and Jody are its American clippings, and Jody rose through the 1950s and 1960s, peaking in the early 1970s while remaining in masculine use throughout.

Meaning

woman of Judea, Jewish woman

Through Judith, from the Hebrew Yehudit, the feminine of Yehudi — a person of the tribe or kingdom of Judah. Genesis explains the tribal name from a verb meaning to praise. The chain from tribe to region to people to name is fully documented.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jody went to 16 girls in 2025, but Jodi is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 52, which makes it the 908th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,930 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 30,909 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Jody itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Judith stands behind it with a documented history reaching into the Hebrew scriptures.
  • It functions for either sex, which some families specifically want.
  • Short, bright and impossible to mispronounce.
What to consider
  • Three spellings were in use at once, so the written form has to be given.
  • It is genuinely unisex, so the name does not signal sex on paper.
