The story of Bayleigh
A motte-and-bailey castle has a mound and a walled enclosure, and the bailey is that enclosure; the Old Bailey court stands on the street named for London's wall. Separately a bailiff was a steward. Bailey became an American girls' name, and Bayleigh is a modern respelling in current use.
Meaning
bailiff; castle outer wall
Through Bailey, from the Old French bailli, 'bailiff' or 'steward', and separately from baille, the outer wall of a castle. The Old Bailey in London is named for the ward along the city wall. Both routes are documented. The -leigh respelling is modern.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
