Bartolo
Masculine · “Aramaic "son of Talmai”
Bartolo already contains a patronymic. The Aramaic name behind it, bar-Talmai, means son of Talmai — so the surname-like sense is built into the given name, and a Bartolo whose father was also named Bartolo is carrying the phrase twice over.

The story of Bartolo
The apostle's cult spread the long form across Europe, and every language shortened it, because Bartholomaeus is unusable in daily speech: Italian made Bartolo and Bartolomeo, Spanish Bartolo and Bartolomé, English produced Bartle, Bat and the surname Bates, and Russian gave Varfolomey. Bartolo is the front-clipped form, which is the normal English and Romance direction, and in Spanish it also became a stock comic name — Rossini's Doctor Bartolo in The Barber of Seville is the best-known instance. In American records it arrives with Italian and Mexican immigration and peaks in 1921.
Meaning
Aramaic "son of Talmai"
Bar is Aramaic for son; Talmai is a personal name that appears in the Hebrew Bible, possibly from telem, a furrow, giving something like abounding in furrows or ploughman. The apostle called Bartholomew in the Gospels is identified only by this patronymic, and his personal name is not recorded — a point worth stating, because it means the name of one of the twelve apostles is not actually a name but a description of whose son he was. Bartolo is the Italian and Spanish short form of Bartolomeo or Bartolomé.

The trade-off
- The meaning is documented back to Aramaic and tied to a named apostle.
- It is already a short form, so it needs no shortening.
- It is settled in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese without being common in English.
- Bart is the obvious English nickname and carries a strong cartoon association.
- English speakers reliably put the stress on the first syllable.
- It reads as distinctly Italian or Hispanic, which may or may not suit the family.
