Barrington
Masculine
Barrington is an English place name that took hold in Jamaica. It decomposes into three parts — a personal name, the Old English -ing- meaning the people of, and tūn, a farmstead — so it originally described a settlement belonging to one man's followers, and its American peak in 1984 tracks Caribbean rather than English usage.

The story of Barrington
English aristocratic surnames became given names in Jamaica and across the anglophone Caribbean in a pattern that is well documented and quite different from the American one: names such as Barrington, Winston, Delroy, Everton and Devon were taken up as first names in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Barrington Levy, whose recording career began in 1977, is the best-known bearer, and the American figures — thin before 1970, peaking in 1984 — follow Caribbean migration to New York, Florida and Toronto rather than any English source. In England itself Barrington remains a surname and a set of village names.

Old English "the farmstead of Bara's people"
The -ington ending is transparent: a personal name, plus -inga-, of the people of, plus tūn, an enclosed farm or village. The first element is disputed and differs by village — the Barringtons in Cambridgeshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset do not all have the same origin, and candidates include a personal name Bara and a word for a grove. The reading given here is the most commonly cited, not a settled one. The Irish surname Barrington is often an anglicization of Ó Bearáin, a separate name.

The Bufford test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Barrington's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Bufford climbed just as high around 1936, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Bufford's path sketches the road Barrington is walking now.
