The story of Azula
Lapis lazuli came from a single valley in Afghanistan and supplied the only true blue pigment in medieval Europe, at a price above gold. The word traveled with the stone: Persian to Arabic to Spanish. Azula entered American given-name use after an animated series character introduced in 2005, and is in current use.
Meaning
blue
From the Spanish and Portuguese azul, 'blue', from the Arabic lazward, from the Persian lazhward — the lapis lazuli stone and the color ground from it. The initial l was lost in Spanish, being mistaken for the article. The word is documented at every stage.

The Latonja test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Azula's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Latonja climbed just as high around 1969, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Latonja's path sketches the road Azula is walking now.

The trade-off
- The lapis-lazuli etymology is one of the best color-word histories there is.
- The English azure comes from the same word, which is a good connection.
- Three syllables of open vowels, which carries unusually well.
- One animated character carries a strong and rather villainous association.
- Azul is the ordinary Spanish word and reads as masculine.
- It is very new as a given name.
