The story of Hadassa
Esther conceals her Jewish descent at the Persian court and intervenes to stop a massacre; the book gives Hadassah as her Hebrew name in its second verse. Hadassah is also the name of the largest Jewish women's organization, founded in 1912. The name appears in American records and is in current use.
Meaning
myrtle
From the Hebrew hadassah, 'myrtle', from hadas, the shrub. The book of Esther names her Hadassah and says she was also called Esther, which is either Persian or Babylonian. The myrtle is one of the four species of Sukkot. The Hebrew is ordinary and the meaning undisputed.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- The myrtle meaning is concrete and the plant has real ritual significance.
- The double-naming in the book of Esther is a genuinely interesting detail.
- Dassi and Hadas are two short forms with real use.
- Hadassah with the h is the fuller and commoner transliteration.
- The stress placement differs between Hebrew and American readings.
- It reads as specifically Hebrew.
