Azriel means that God is my help, and it is one of a large family of Hebrew names built the same way — a statement about God with the divine element at the end. It also names an angel in some Jewish and Islamic traditions, which gives it a weight most -el names do not carry. Its American peak on girls is 2019.

Where it comes from

The story of Azriel

The -el names are among the oldest and most productive in Hebrew: Michael, Gabriel, Daniel, Samuel, Nathaniel, Israel, Azriel. Each is a short sentence with God as subject or object, and the pattern was still generating names in the biblical period. Azriel stayed rare in Christian Europe, since English-speaking Protestants took up the more prominent -el names and left the minor ones. Its modern American use is recent and belongs to the broader revival of unusual Hebrew names, and its appearance on girls in the 2010s follows the general willingness to use -el names on either sex, as Ariel, Jael and Abigail have all been used.

Meaning

God is my help

Hebrew Azri'el joins ezer, 'help', with the first-person suffix, to el, 'God'. The same ezer appears in Ezra, Eliezer and Azariah. Azriel is named several times in the Hebrew Bible as an ordinary man. Separately, in some later Jewish and Islamic traditions Azrael is the name of the angel of death, though that spelling and that figure are not in scripture and the two names are often confused.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, theologically precise and expressible in four words.
  • Az and Ari are both usable short forms with a modern character.
  • It works on either sex, which suits families who do not want a sex-marked name.
What to consider
  • It is confused with Azrael, the angel of death in later tradition, which is a different name.
  • In American use it is more common on boys, so forms will often assume male.
  • Stress falls differently in English and Hebrew.
