Ayman
Masculine · Arabic roots · “Right-hand”
Ayman is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 2,880 boys against 51 girls since 1880.
Ayman comes from the Arabic root y-m-n, the same three letters behind the words for the right hand and for good fortune — a pairing that also gave Arabic the name of Yemen. Two syllables, five letters, and the same spelling used from Cairo to Kuala Lumpur. In American classrooms it is a recent arrival still gathering speed.

Where it comes from
From y-m-n (Arabic root: right hand, good fortune) to Ayman
The story of Ayman
The root behind Ayman runs through classical Arabic in two directions at once: yamīn, the right hand, and yumn, good fortune. Ayman is its elative form — the one further to the right, the more fortunate. The Qur'an uses the same word in the phrase al-wādī al-ayman, the right side of the valley, in the account of Moses and the fire. As a personal name it is attested from the earliest generation of Muslims onward, and it traveled with Arabic itself into Turkish, Persian, Urdu, Malay and the languages of the Horn of Africa, picking up a different spelling in nearly every one.
Meaning
Right-hand, and so fortunate or blessed
Arabic أيمن is built on the root y-m-n, which carries both 'right side' and 'good fortune' — much as Latin gave English both 'dexterous' and 'sinister'. Translators render it 'blessed', 'fortunate' or 'righteous' depending on which half of the root they lean on.

Pronouncing Ayman
AY-man
Stress falls on the first syllable in Arabic and in English alike. In Arabic the opening diphthong sits closer to the vowel in 'eye', so 'EYE-man' is also correct and widely heard; the second syllable is light, never 'ay-MAN'.

The Eleazar test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ayman's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eleazar climbed just as high around 1991, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eleazar's path sketches the road Ayman is walking now.
Ayman is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Written the same way across Arabic, English and most Latin-script languages, so it needs no adaptation when it crosses a border.
- Short, evenly stressed and phonetic for English speakers on the second try at worst.
- A documented name in continuous use since the earliest centuries of Islam, not a recent coinage.
- Familiar enough to be recognized in most large American cities, uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom.
- Aiman, Aymen and Eymen are all in real use, so expect to spell it aloud and to see it guessed the other ways on forms and rosters.
- In Pakistan and among Urdu speakers, the spelling Aiman — and sometimes Ayman — is regularly a girl's name. In Arabic and in US records it is a boy's name, but the crossover is worth knowing about.
- Recent American news has carried two very different Aymans: a network television journalist and the al-Qaeda leader killed in 2022. Older adults may recall the second; the association thins with each year.
- English speakers split between AY-man and EYE-man. Deciding early which one you correct people toward saves a lot of small negotiations later.
