The story of Rami
The Arabic Rami rests on one of the oldest verbs in the language, ramā, to throw or to shoot, and medieval Arabic astronomers used its participle al-Rāmī for the archer in the sky. It has been a steady given name across the Levant and North Africa for generations, and traveled with Lebanese, Syrian, Palestinian and Egyptian families to Europe, South America and the United States. The Hebrew Rami came separately, as an everyday short form of Ram, and became common as an independent name in modern Israel. Turkish and Bosnian usage draws on the Arabic side. American records show it arriving in the second half of the twentieth century and holding on since.
