Where it comes from

The story of Dyllon

In the fourth branch of the Mabinogi, a woman is made to step over a magician's rod to prove she is a virgin and gives birth to two boys in the process. The first is named Dylan, is baptized, and at once makes for the sea, where he swims as well as any fish; the text says no wave ever broke beneath him. He is killed later by his uncle, by mistake, and the sea is said to have mourned. That is the whole of him. The name was almost unused until a Welsh poet took it in the twentieth century, and an American musician then took his surname from that poet, or from a Welsh relative, or from a marshal on a television show, depending on which of his own accounts you believe. He has given several and contradicted most of them.

Great tide, or sea son

The Welsh joins a word usually read as sea or flood to an element argued over. The medieval text itself supplies a gloss, which is a warning rather than evidence, since medieval writers explained names the way everybody did then, by whatever sounded right. The sea half is secure; the rest is not, and the double-l spelling here changes nothing about either.

Dyllon sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1992, with 100 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Dyllon sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spoken name is entirely established and needs no explaining anywhere.
  • It has a genuine literary source in one of the oldest bodies of writing in Britain.
  • The doubled l keeps the first vowel short, which the single-l spelling leaves slightly open.
What to consider
  • Dylan is the standard spelling by a wide margin and this one will be read as a slip.
  • Dillon and Dillan also exist, so there are four spellings in circulation for one sound.
  • The name is closely tied to two twentieth-century figures, and both associations are strong.
