Kit has been the everyday name of Christophers and Katherines since at least Elizabethan London, where the playwright Christopher Marlowe was known to his contemporaries as Kit. Three letters, one beat, no silent anything. It is the rare short name that has been in continuous use for centuries and still sounds current.

The story of Kit
Kit began as a spoken shortening rather than a written name. Christopher, from the Greek Christophoros, was clipped to Kit in English mouths by the sixteenth century, which is how Marlowe is still known. Katherine took a parallel route, through Kitty and on to Kit, a pattern well worn in English-speaking families. Both roads are still open, which is why this spelling now arrives at boys and girls in close to equal numbers, and why it increasingly appears on birth certificates with no longer name standing behind it at all.
Meaning
Short form of Christopher, "bearing Christ", and of Katherine
Which meaning applies depends on which road the name came down. Christopher's sense is firmly established. Katherine's own root is less settled: the Greek katharos, "pure", was attached to it later, and the earlier form Aikaterine has no agreed source. Separately, kit is an ordinary English word for a set of gear, and for a young fox or rabbit.

About 1 boy in 7,835 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 8,759 for Kit itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- Three letters, spelled exactly as it sounds — a child can write it before most of their classmates can write theirs.
- Documented in English use since the Elizabethan period, so it arrives with a long record rather than as a new coinage.
- Can stand alone or sit behind a longer legal name: Christopher, Katherine, Katherina and Kathleen all shorten to it naturally.
- Works unchanged for a boy or a girl, and has relatives in German, Spanish, Italian and Scots that people will recognize.
- The girl-boy split is close to even, so strangers reading the name on a form will genuinely not know which to expect. That is workable, but expect the occasional misaddressed letter for either child.
- Kit is also a common English noun — gear, equipment, a young fox — and, for many people, a chocolate bar. None of this is unkind, but the puns will arrive early.
- Because it began as a nickname, some people will ask what it is short for. The honest answer can simply be "nothing", though pairing it with a longer legal name is an option if you want one held in reserve.
- Over a bad phone line it can land as Kip, Kid or Kate. A one-syllable name gives a listener very little to work with.
