Our story of Avrie
Our reading is that the speed of a crossing depends on how visible the name's male identity was, and Avery is the case that shows it. A name with a famous male bearer or a long institutional history resists: Michael never crossed, Robert never crossed. A surname-derived name with no particular male anchor crosses fast, because there is nothing for parents of boys to hold onto once the female use starts. Avery in 1990 was a surname used for boys with no great tradition behind it, and within a decade the female share passed half and the male use collapsed. Once a name reaches that point the movement is self-accelerating, since each additional girl makes the name marginally less attractive for a boy. The whole process for Avery took less than twenty years, which is about as fast as the mechanism can run.

Germanic alf and ric, elf and ruler
Avery descends from the Norman French Avery, itself from the Germanic Alberich, from alf, an elf, and ric, a ruler, the same source as Aubrey. An alternative traces it to Alfred, from aelf, an elf, and raed, counsel. Avrie is a modern American respelling. The name is now given overwhelmingly to girls and this spelling peaks in 2013.

The Shyra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Avrie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shyra climbed just as high around 1985, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shyra's path sketches the road Avrie is walking now.
