Aubrie
Feminine · “elf ruler”
Aubrie is Aubrey with a softer ending, and the name behind both is very old: the Germanic Alberich, carried into England by Norman French speakers and worn there for centuries. The -ie spelling is the newest chapter, arriving with a wave of American respellings that traded -ey for -ie and -ee. In the mouth it is two easy syllables that almost nobody in the English-speaking world will need explained.

The story of Aubrie
The root is the Germanic name Alberich, which passed into Old French as Aubri or Auberi and crossed the Channel with Norman speakers after 1066. In medieval England it settled in as Aubrey, used steadily for men and hardening into a common surname along the way. American parents began giving Aubrey to daughters in the twentieth century, a shift that gathered speed after the band Bread released their song "Aubrey" in the early 1970s. Aubrie appeared as part of that turn — the same name, respelled in the -ie style that also gave us Kaylie, Rylie and Hailie.
Meaning
elf ruler, or elf power
From the Germanic elements alb 'elf' and ric 'power, ruler'. Aubrie is a spelling variant of Aubrey and carries the same meaning; the sense of 'elf' here is the older one — a supernatural being of Germanic belief, not a small winged creature.

The Marcie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Aubrie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marcie climbed just as high around 1971, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marcie's path sketches the road Aubrie is walking now.
Aubrie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Pronunciation is never in doubt — anyone who has met an Aubrey reads it correctly on sight.
- Traceable in an unbroken line to a Germanic name in use before the Norman Conquest.
- Several ready-made short forms — Bri, Brie, Aubs — that also work as names in their own right.
- Relatives exist across German, Italian and French, so the name is not stranded in English.
- The spelling is the sticking point. Aubrey is the default in most people's heads, with Aubree close behind, so expect a lifetime of small corrections on forms, coffee cups and class lists.
- Aubrey has been a man's name in English for centuries and is still given to boys. The -ie spelling reads clearly as a girl's name in American records, but the family it belongs to travels both ways.
- Most people carrying this spelling are in their teens now, so it can sound of a particular stretch of time rather than of no era at all. Its trajectory is easing back from a high point, which usually means fewer, not none — a child with this name will likely be the only one in her school.
