Lexie
Feminine · “defender”
Lexie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 16,789 girls against 436 boys since 1880.
Lexie is the tail end of one of the oldest continuously used names in Europe — Alexandra — clipped down to its last two syllables and left to stand on its own. That clipping is not new: English speakers have been trimming Alexandra and Alexander from the front for centuries, and Lexie has been on American record-books far longer than most people assume. The x gives it a bright click in the middle, which is most of the reason it says itself so easily.

Where it comes from
From Alexandros to Lexie
The story of Lexie
The root is Greek: Alexandros, a name borne across the ancient Mediterranean and later spread by Christian tradition into nearly every European language. Its feminine, Alexandra, traveled into English and Scottish use and was shortened in ordinary speech — Sandy and Sandra from the back half, Lexie and Lex from the front. Scotland has a particularly long habit of the Lex- forms, and they crossed to North America with Scottish and Northern English families. Lexie has since become an independent given name in the United States, no longer needing an Alexandra behind it, though it still works as the short form for Alexandra, Alexandria and Alexis.
Meaning
defender, protector of people
Lexie carries the meaning of the name it was cut from: Greek Alexandros, built on alexein, 'to defend', and andros, 'man'. Alexandra is the feminine form, and Alexis comes from the same root and also feeds into Lexie.

The Madie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lexie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Madie climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Madie's path sketches the road Lexie is walking now.
Lexie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Says itself on first hearing — two syllables, one stress, no pronunciation ambiguity in English.
- Comes with a ready formal option: Alexandra, Alexandria or Alexis on documents, Lexie everywhere else, if that suits you later.
- A long, unbroken record in American use, so it is familiar to every generation rather than reading as newly coined.
- Belongs to a very widely known name family, which means teachers and strangers recognize it immediately even where the exact spelling is rare.
- Lexie, Lexi, Lexy and Lexie's cousin Lexa all sound identical, so the spelling will need saying aloud fairly often. It is a small, lifelong correction rather than a problem.
- It reads as a short form, which some people hear as informal in adult settings — a resume, a nameplate. Choosing a longer legal name and using Lexie daily is one common way around it.
- The name rose sharply and is now easing back, so it carries a mild sense of a particular stretch of years, the way Sandra or Sandy do for earlier ones.
